Save the date for award-winning show Grandad Anansi!
About the show
Abi and her Grandad tell each other Anansi folktales. They play games and share secrets as they work together in the garden.
Grandad is as smart and mischievous as the wily Anansi legend, a part human, part spider and the subject of many West African and Caribbean folk stories. Can he find a way to tell his granddaughter about his plans to return to Jamaica, his beloved homeland?
Grandad Anansi is an uplifting tale of love, courage and letting go that celebrates storytelling and shines a light on Jamaican culture and the Windrush generation.
Written by award-winning children’s author Elayne Ogbeta, Grandad Anansi is an exciting collaboration by Half Moon and Z-arts that we are delighted to present during Black History Month.

About the artists
Abi is played by Chardae Phillips, who recently played Kim in 1927’s ‘Please Right Back’, touring around the UK from July 2024- Jan 2025. Nominated for best show at Edinburgh International festival. Chardae is a trained gymnast who can perform a range of acrobatic tricks. This is her first tour with Half Moon / Z-arts.
Grandad is played by Marcus Hercules, an established actor and Reggae artist from Manchester. He aims to inspire through heartfelt, real music with a message of positivity and inclusion, “Do the things you love, love the things you do”. He created the role of Grandad and has been involved in the production since the beginning.
The BSL performances will be interpreted by Thomas Simper, a registered BSL interpreter with NRCPD, actor and facilitator who began his involvement with Half Moon Theatre as part of the Exchange for Change artform development programme. Recent performances include Animal Farm at Stratford East and a special British Sign Language exploration of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at the BBC Proms.
In this performance of Grandad Anansi, the BSL interpreter will be stood to the side, but integrated as part of the world of the piece. Thomas will be wearing costume, observing, and interpreting the action of the two central characters.
