Meet The Artist: Kitty Benford
February 17, 2025 | BlogsFind out more about Kitty Benford, who recently joined forces with us and Greatwell Homes, to host a day of filming and reflection with a brilliant group of Wellingborough women.
What kind of artist are you?
I’m a Theatre Director and Workshop Facilitator, specialising in co-creation with communities and young people.
Where do you find inspiration?
My passion for working with young people started in Wellingborough. As a teenager growing up in the town, I was fortunate to be a part of the Youth Theatre at The Castle Theatre. Not only did that experience give me friends for life, and set me on my career path, but it also supported me through some of the toughest times in my life. Those third spaces for young people to develop are even more important in 2025, where it’s even more challenging to be a teenager. I love co-creating with young people and communities because it means the stories we tell together have a real impact, not just on those who are watching but on those of us who are collaborating on it too, the buy in is much higher, but so are the stakes!

What advice would you give to anyone who wants to be an artist in Northamptonshire?
Take it step by step, don’t pressure yourself into thinking you have to wake up one day and decide that – BAM – from today you are an artist. The reality is if you want to be one, you probably already are. Take your time, make relationships that give you the opportunity to collaborate and learn from others. There are loads of very generous artists in the county who are passionate about supporting the next generation of artists, so don’t be afraid to ask for support or advice, as my Mum used to say ‘if you don’t ask the answer will always be no’.
Do you have any memories of Made With Many projects that are important to you?
Back in 2021, Made With Many partnered with Warts And All Theatre for Borough Bash, my final project with Warts after working there for 3 years. This project meant loads to me as it not only showcased the importance of co-creation with young people and communities but also toured my home town, even taking over my old school field for a day! Although I don’t tend to work that regularly in Wellingborough or Corby these days, I still enjoyed coming back to work where it all started for me when the chance arises!
I recently joined forces with Made With Many and Greatwell Homes to host a day of filming and reflection with a brilliant group of Wellingborough women, to celebrate International Women’s Day. So keep your eyes peeled!!
What is your favourite biscuit?
Ooooh! Probably a ginger nut… but a real treat for me is a cinnamon swirl (specifically from 7/11 in Copenhagen!)
