Drop in Flower Crown Making Workshop Join us for a FREE crafty drop-in for all ages at the KHL Community Workshop. Make your own Flower Crown, an eastern European traditional craft run by local artist Daniela Laslau from Corby CAN. Let your creativity run wild and follow some easy steps to design a flower crown that you'll be proud to wear. Whether your style is rustic or sophisticated, we'll learn together how to make them, in a relaxed environment and have a great time doing it. Date: Sunday 6th November Time: Drop in anytime between 11am - 3pm (Please note - this activity is available on a first come first served basis - it may get quite busy at times throughout the day) Venue: KHL Community Workshop, off School Place, Gainsborough Rd, Corby NN18 0QF (there is limited parking accessible from School Place with height restrictions in place) Who is it for: All ages are welcome although children under 16 should be accompanied by an adult. Cost: FREE Share: invite your friends on facebook Some history of Flower Crowns Flower crowns have a rich history dating back to Ancient Greece, so they are not only reserved for special occasions like weddings and festivals. Classic flower crowns have been crafted by cultures all over the world for centuries; in fact, Julius Caesar's laurel crown is a variation on the style. Flower crowns were worn as a visible representation of one's achievements, as well as a sign of respect and honour and some still follow these traditions, like schools honouring children with flower crowns for their success in personal and academic development. Ukrainian, Romanian, Slovak, and Moldavian national costumes all include flower wreaths, which are traditionally worn on special events and religious holidays. Romanians celebrate in June the 'Sânziene' day, when young women are expected to wear white and spend the day searching for and picking flowers; one of these flowers must be Galium verum (Lady's bedstraw or Yellow bedstraw), also known as "Sânziànă" in Romanian. Girls in the community plait flowery crowns from the flowers they picked during the day and wear them when they return home at sunset. There they can celebrate with their significant other whilst dancing around a fire.
