Meet The Artist: Phiona Richards
January 26, 2026 | BlogsPhiona Richards is about to host a 4 week project PAINT.LAYER.REFLECT in Wellingborough this February as part of our Community Commissions…and will also be getting involved in Well Creative Festival this March.
What kind of artist are you?
I describe myself as a Visual Storyteller and Maker of Books, based in Corby, Northamptonshire. My socially engaged practice brings together heritage crafts such as embroidery and bookbinding, dovetailed with techniques including mandala-making, collage and watercolour. These gentle, hands-on processes offer a powerful way to be present and fully in the moment. The main focus of my workshops is well-being and collaboration, which often leads me into designing and creating community projects that invite people to slow down, notice and make. I’m a Fellow of Design Nation and was previously an Associate Artist with Made With Many.
Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration in the quiet joy of making, through simply working with paper, thread and fabric. I was deeply shaped by my Mother and Auntie, who taught me to value materials and passed down a strong “Make do and Mend” spirit that continues to influence my practice. I’m drawn to the textures and patterns found in both nature and architecture — leaves, flowers, and monuments often find their way into my work. I enjoy slowing down with materials, working mindfully and placing value on the process itself, allowing time and curiosity to guide what might emerge.

What advice would you give to anyone who wants to be an artist in Northamptonshire?
Get involved with the local creative scene. Go to exhibitions, join or visit local groups, and look for ways to collaborate. Don’t be put off by funding applications, if it doesn’t work out the first time, ask for feedback and try again. And remember, growth takes time. Be patient with yourself.
Do you have any memories of Made With Many Projects that are important to you?
Every Made With Many project I’ve been part of holds its own special memories. One that remains particularly important to me took place in 2018, when I worked alongside fellow local artist Carole Miles to mark 100 years since some women won the right to vote. Together with a group of local women aged between 15 and 86, we created a celebratory banner, which we later processed together in London. Sharing that moment collectively was incredibly powerful.
The banner has gone on to have a life beyond the original project and now forms part of the Beyond the 100 exhibition. It has been displayed at Corby Library with an accompanying book, and I feel very proud of this legacy, which continues to be shared many years after it was created.

What is your favourite biscuit or treat?
My favourite treat is a Matcha Latte with coconut milk. I love the vibrant green colour and tastes so good.
