Looking Ahead

Blog by Helen Willmott, Programme Director, Made With Many
17th December 2020

Normally in December I spend some time looking back on the year, considering what went well, what we could have done better and how we’ve changed along the way. And although there’s been lots to reflect on during 2020; successes, mistakes and a whole load of changes, something in me doesn’t want to do that this December.

So, I’ve made the decision to look forward instead. With the scientific achievements in developing COVID vaccines over the last month, the future is seeming brighter and a much more exciting place to be than the recent past. And whilst I know that there’s still some tough times ahead, and that the effects of the pandemic will be with us for some time, I am certain that there is much joy to come along with the inevitable challenges of 2021.

Like many people, I’m most looking forward to seeing people again. Some of my immediate family live abroad and it will have been a long wait to see them again, whenever that’s possible. But I’m also massively hopeful about the opportunities to be at events again with my local community, friends and family. To sing ‘happy birthday’ in person rather than through a computer screen. To sit around an actual table, drinking tea and eating cake, making plans. To being in a busy office with my colleagues.

Work wise, we’re also looking ahead to when we can re-start in-person events, thinking about when workshops, exhibitions and even festivals will be possible in both Corby and Wellingborough, hopefully all during 2021. And even plotting for big projects and events in 2022 and 2023! The next Corby Pole Fair, a once in 20 years event planned for 2022, is a major part of those discussions, and there’s the chance now for local people to contribute to the plans. And more generally, we want to know what residents of both Corby and Wellingborough want to do most, where the celebrations should be and how we best remember the events of 2020.
