Helen Willmott tries out an embroidery kit

Everyday Creativity

Blog by Helen Willmott, Programme Director, Made With Many 15th October 2020 The last week has definitely felt autumnal. Long rainy days are giving way to dark nights and we’re still feeling the effects of reduced social contact and limited leisure activities. I’m sure I’m not the only person who faced a long wet weekend in the house trying to find something to do in an attempt to avoid the endless household chores! So a few weeks ago, when it became apparent that the current COVID restrictions were here to stay for a while yet, I set about finding a new hobby to fill my time and replace the long walks and time in the garden of the last few months. My requirements were quite simple – I wanted something that I could do sitting under a blanket on the sofa, that didn’t involve looking at a screen and would potentially lower my stress levels. Last week, inspired by Made With Many’s Associate Artists, The Eloquent Fold, I picked up a sewing needle for the first time in over 20 years and started working on an embroidery kit.  After a few frustrating attempts I had to consult my mum for help with threading the needle, but once I got started I began to relax and lose myself in the repetitive action of stitches. And an added bonus is that soon I’ll have a lovely new wall hanging for my hallway, and potentially a load of homemade presents for friends and family. Why not have a think about what new creative hobby you and your household could try this autumn? You might be one of the 1,400 households across Corby and Wellingborough that have received a creative activity pack from us over the last month. If not, there’s loads of inspiration on the internet, including on our website and Facebook page. Or ask your friends, family and neighbours what they do on a dreary autumn day. We’d love to see what you’ve been making. To find inspiration, and share your creations, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn.
